Vivo Says Its 3D Face Scanning is 10 Times More Accurate Than Apple

Vivo’s new facial recognition technology is 10 times more secure than Apple’s Face ID, Vivo unveiled a new 3D sensing technology during MWC in China that might be coming to real-world devices other than smartphones. For smartphones, it will be used for facial recognition. Vivo’s iteration promises 10 times more accuracy as compared to Apple’s Face ID, which might open up applications other than just smartphones . Time of Flight The company calls it Time of Flight (TOF), as it measures the time it takes for the light to bounce back from the subject, and is able to make accurate measurements. This allows for better facial recognition, and can also be applied to gestures, motion tracking, 3D photography, and AR. TOF can be paired up with software-level features and AI to enhance security even further and takes much less space than the sensors seen in the iPhone X and Xiaomi’s Mi 8 Explorer Edition. Vivo’s sensor operates in a simpler way, unlike Structure of Light-based sensors, that work...

Cryptocurrency Ads Return to Facebook After a Brief Ban

The social media giant is slowly easing up to the blanket crypto ad ban. Despite being on the business end of a gun every now and then, cryptocurrencies are getting a respite in the form of Facebook allowing crypto ads after a ban. Just earlier this year,   the social network banned all ads related to the crypto universe, in a bid to prevent users from getting scammed by con artists. As it happens, the network has changed its stance less than 4 months later and will eventually allow some ads to run on its servers. However, ICOs or initial coin offerings, as well as binary options, are still being banned by Facebook authorities. Decentralization 101 The company now says that it was intentionally broad in its original interpretation of the ban. In a post related to the move, Mark Zuckerberg has called trends like cryptocurrencies as ones “that take power from centralized systems and put it back into people’s hands” Facebook will also allow only those advertisers to run ads ...

Google Pixel 3 XL leak shows a notch

Earlier this month, I did a   story   on a leak of Google’s upcoming flagship smartphone, the Pixel 3. The story received mixed views, with many readers commenting things like “speculation is useless” and “we never know until it’s confirmed by the company”. Well, almost all of the leaks have been confirmed once more. The renowned industry insider, Steve Hemerstoffer (also known as OnLeaks) has come up with high definition (HD) 360 degree renders of the Pixel 3 and its larger variant. In my previous post, I wrote the Pixel 3 to have a size of 5.3 inches, which is only an inch off from what OnLeaks has confirmed it to be. To further up my happiness and pride, the Pixel 3 XL will have the exact same size I told it would be: 6.2 inches! It’s important to note here that by keeping the XL at 6.2 inches, Google comes into direct competition with Samsung’s current flagship, the Galaxy S9+. While Google’s smartphone lineup might be lauded for delivering Android updates the quick...

Bizarre excuse offered for Marcelo injury which has Real Madrid star sidelined for Brazil

The back spasms which forced the defender out of a win over Serbia may have been caused by a hotel mattress, according to the Selecao's team doctor Brazil's   team doctor has said a hotel mattress may have caused the back spasms which forced Marcelo off the field during   a 2-0 victory over Serbia. The Real Madrid left-back was substituted after just 10 minutes of the game and early analysis suggested he was suffering from back problems. Dr Rodrigo Lasmar told reporters after the game that he was optimistic over the 30-year-old's chances of being fit for   Brazil's round of 16 clash with Mexico on Monday, but Marcelo's sleeping conditions might need to be assessed. "It is still too early to make an accurate diagnosis," said Dr Lasmar. "The injury may be related to the hotel mattress. "Although our expectation is good, but we have to be calm and wait for the next few days." Marcelo missed three Real Madrid matches due to a hamstring injury in...

Romelu Lukaku: Belgium striker set to miss England game

England v Belgium Venue:   Kaliningrad Stadium, Kaliningrad   Date:   Thursday, 28 June at 19:00 BST Belgium striker Romelu Lukaku is set to miss Thursday's   World Cup game against England, which will decide who wins Group G. The 25-year-old Manchester United player suffered an ankle injury in Saturday's 5-2 win against Tunisia. Belgium manager Roberto Martinez said Lukaku had a scan which "brought us good news" but added the England game is "one day too early for him". "I don't think it is going to take any longer than that," said Martinez. Lukaku has scored four goals so far in Russia, one behind England's Harry Kane in the race for the Golden Boot. Both teams are already assured of their place in the last 16 and are expected to make a number of changes for their final group game. With both sides already qualified, and level on points, goal difference and goals scored, their disciplinary records will decide who finishes top of the group ...

England's possible route to the World Cup final

Defending champions Germany crashed out on a day of World Cup drama in Groups E and F, but what does it all mean for England's knockout prospects? Gareth Southgate's side are already through to the last-16 having beaten Tunisia and Panama in Group G, but the outcome of Thursday evening's meeting with Belgium will dictate whether they go through as group winners or in second place. Which scenario would provide a more favourable route to the final? Here, we take a look at what might be in store - and why a second-placed finish might be preferable. If they win Group G England currently sit above Belgium at the top of Group G owing to their superior disciplinary record (they have received two bookings to Belgium's three). If they stay there after Thursday evening's meeting between the two sides, they will face the runners-up from Group H in the last-16. As things stand, that would be Senegal, who are on four points in Group H, behind Japan on head-to-head record and one...

Germany’s World Cup exit: What went wrong for the champions?

Germany are out of the World Cup following a dramatic 2-0 defeat by South Korea in their final game in Group F. The defending champions finished bottom and the recriminations will begin. But what exactly went wrong for Joachim Low and his team? The clues were there in the opening game defeat by Mexico and there was further evidence of Germany's flaws in their unconvincing last-gasp victory over Sweden in the second fixture. But being beaten by a hitherto point-less South Korea side in the final game really rammed home the point. This was a pitiful defence of their crown. European teams are making a habit of this. Spain were also eliminated in the group stage when defending the trophy four years ago. Italy finished bottom when attempting to repeat their 2006 triumph in South Africa and France did so too in 2002. The last four European teams to go into the tournament as champions have now gone out in the group stage. But what is the reason for it? Here, we take a look at the key fa...
