Qualcomm Launches Snapdragon 439, 429 and 632 for Mid-Rangers

Qualcomm’s new chips bring a host of improvements and new features to the mid-range market.

Qualcomm is introducing three new processors designed for phones and tablets, the Snapdragon 429, 439, and 632.

These processors are not meant to be the best of what Qualcomm has to offer as these are geared towards mid-tier smartphones and tablets market, offering better performance than some of the entry-level options currently being offered in the market.

The Snapdragon 439 and 429 follow in the footsteps of the 435 and 425 and bring FinFET to the low-end phones. The Snapdragon 632 is more like the Snapdragon 652 as it’s now a trend to bring cores with bigger and better architectures down to the mid-tier devices.

Starting off with the Snapdragon 632, the new chipset is positioned as a successor to the Snapdragon 630. The Snapdragon 632 is supposed to be up to 40 percent faster than the Snapdragon 626. While supporting displays of around 1080p resolution, cameras up to 24 megapixels or a dual 13-megapixel arrangement with 4K video capturing capability, and an LTE modem with carrier aggregation for faster speeds.

The Snapdragon’s 429 and 439 processors are an upgrade over the 425 and 430 chips as they are supposedly up to 25 percent faster and more battery efficient. The 429 can support either a single 16-megapixel camera or dual 8-megapixel cameras and a screen resolution of around 720p, while the 439 supports a resolution of around 1080p and can go up to a 21-megapixel camera, or the same 8-megapixel dual camera alternative.

These new chips also have an advantage in their design compatibility; the Snapdragon 632, 439, 429 are software compatible with each other and with the existing 626, 625 and 450 platforms

The Snapdragon 632 is pin compatible with the 626, 625 and 450, and the 439 and 429 are pin compatible with each other.

The software compatibility means better cost efficiency on the part of OEMs. The Snapdragon 632 is also pin compatible with several other old chips which makes it easy for OEMs to simply swap these into their existing designs.

There isn’t much to drool over these chips as they are focused on the affordable, mid-range market.

Phones running the new chips are supposed to start coming out in the second half of the year.
