Previously worn by Wayne Rooney and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, among others, the 20-year-old now sports one of the most coveted shirts in football

Manchester United have confirmed that Marcus Rashford will wear the club's iconic number 10 jersey when the new season begins.

Rashford donned the famous shirt for the first time on Sunday evening, as United fell to a 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich in their final match of pre-season.
It was the striker's first match since returning from post-World Cup holidays, the 20-year-old taking in 63 minutes of first-team action as the Red Devils fell to defeat.

All the same, Rashford will be thrilled to pull on the shirt, having had his eye on the number for some time, manager Jose Mourinho explained.
“He wanted it,” the gaffer told MUTV. “He always wanted it. Of course, he respected the big [Wayne] Rooney and then Zlatan [Ibrahimovic] wanted to have it.
“Of course, he was in the shadow, waiting for the opportunity and now the shirt is empty.
“It's something fantastic for the kid, let's give the shirt to him.”

As mentioned, Ibrahimovic previously wore the shirt after Rooney departed the club for Everton, with the latter having donned it for 11 years during his time at Old Trafford.

Rashford, however, becomes the first homegrown player to wear the number since David Beckham sported it in the 1996-97 campaign.
Other big names to have famously worn United's famous 10 include Teddy Sheringham, Mark Hughes and Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The switch in number represents Rashford's third change in four seasons as a first-team player, first being handed 39 by Louis van Gaal in his debut year followed by the number 19 the following season.
